There are some people who like to watch films to be entertained either by laughing, getting scared, or by simply relating to the characters, there are also some who watch films just to get distracted and have some time away from reality, and there are some who likes to watch certain types of films that would actually make them think and make them use every inch of their brains.
Films that would make you wonder for days, that would make you think of different how’s and why’s, films that would make you research to help you understand what you think you don’t understand. Films are usually made for people’s entertainment, but it wouldn’t hurt for us to actually explore our brain and emotions. So here are a couple of movies that would totally stretch your brains out.
(WARNING! This article contains spoilers.)
STRANGER THAN FICTION
The very first film that totally played our minds and emotions is this 2006 film, Stranger Than Fiction. People were actually surprised to see comedian, Will Ferrell, in this drama-fantasy film along-side Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, and Queen Latifah. This film took quite a turn with its out-of-this-world and yet amazing plot.
The story is about a man named Harold Crick, who is an Internal Revenue Service agent. He pretty much does every single thing every single day, but one day seemed to be a little peculiar, every single thing he does, he hears a woman’s voice. This voice later turns out to be the voice of the author, who is writing a book. That certain book turns out to be his life. Unfortunately for him, the author is known for ending her main protagonist’s life. So as a viewer, it would totally freak you out because you would start wondering what if it happens to you? What if it is currently happening to someone you know and you can’t do anything to stop it? What if there is a person out there who is actually writing a real person’s story and their lives would depend on how the story would end? If you haven’t watched this film, then you simply got to.
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
This next film is extremely relatable to anyone who has ever fallen in love and got their hearts broken that they would do anything to forget it ever happened. This film follows a former couple, portrayed by Jim Carey and Kate Winslet, who wants to have their memories of each other erased by a certain procedure done by a New York City firm, Lacuna inc.
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind used a nonlinear narrative that actually made the film extremely mind-boggling. It is critically acclaimed and even earned two Academy Award nominations, Best Actress for Kate Winslet, and Best Original Screenplay, which they actually won. It is considered to be one of the greatest films ever made in the 21st century. It ended so beautifully as it teaches how people shouldn’t get their memories erased for it is a privilege to remember them and actually learn from them. It reminds people that everything happens for a reason and that no matter how bad these memories may be, it will teach everyone a lesson.
LIFE OF PI
This film actually won not just one but four Academy Awards in 2012, including Best Director for Ang Lee, who also won an Academy Award for Brokeback Mountain. It earned over $600 million despite not having any huge stars in the film. It was about an Indian man named Pi, and he reveals his story about how he survived a shipwreck with a Bengal Tiger.
What is so great about this film is it also out-of-this-world, like a man and a tiger in one lifeboat seems too impossible to happen. As the film ends, he revealed that he told an alternate version of the story to the authorities, he replaced the other animals as people and him as the tiger himself. However, he didn’t confirm he denied which is actually the real one. This is the type of film that would totally leave a person in a bewilderment. By the time you finish watching, you would wonder which is actually the real story. That is what made this film extraordinary because it leaves the viewer the choice of which perspective would he or she like to believe.
