A few of the best book to movie adaptations are the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings series, Forrest Gump, The Bourne franchise, the James Bond franchise and more. It is just too nice to see a great movie out of an incredible book.

If you’re a total bookworm, you would totally understand how it feels like if a movie did an outstanding job adapting your favorite book. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, there are a couple of times movies just didn’t quite do things right. Who would want to see a bad adaptation of their favorite book? To clarify what it is about, here are a some of the worst book to film adaptations in Hollywood history.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA

In 2008, the very first installment of the Twilight saga took the entire world by storm, with its box-office hit of more than $300 million. It is about a teenage girl named Bella, who fell in love with a vampire named Edward. It is adapted in Stephenie Meyer’s series of the same name. The film was indeed a success, however, that didn’t necessarily mean it was a great film. Teenage girls went crazy over this love story, but the rest of the people of the world are just not too happy with it. Critics said that the book alone was bad, but the films just even made it worse. It stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who’s acting was deeply criticized.

Despite the series’ really bad ratings, it continued to sell until they managed to five films for the series, which hit the box office of $3.34 billion (total of five films). Critics, and even just normal people who love to read and watch films think that the Twilight saga is simply beyond horrible because it simply has no moral lesson, the acting was just too awful, and the story was simply dull.

This just simply means that just because it is a blockbuster hit, doesn’t mean it is such a great movie, sometimes it is probably just because of how teenagers actually could relate to Bella, and they hope to find their very own Edward, no matter how disturbing it may be. So it technically didn’t fail in the box-office, it just failed as an overall movie.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES

According to film critics, this series was probably made to match up with the incredibly amazing Hunger Games series, they’re both dystopic and talks about how the future of the world is going to be, with both female lead who is breaking all the rules.

Unfortunately, Jennifer Lawrence did a fantastic job in Hunger Games, which is basically why it was considered to be such a great adaptation of the novel. However, Shailene Woolley didn’t seem to get the viewers as she plays the role of the main protagonist, Tris. Critics call it “a little too boring and predictable”, despite the unusual story it brings. The book was said to be really interesting because of the fresh idea, unfortunately, the films didn’t do justice to how incredible the book is. Award-winning actress, Kate Winslet, was even a part of the films, but it still wasn’t enough to get through Hollywood’s high standards.

“The uncertain sense of setting, bloated plot, drab visual style and solid yet underwhelming lead turns from Shailene Woodley and Theo James don’t necessarily make the best case for series newcomers.” – Andrew Barker of Variety

PERCY JACKSON SERIES

Almost everyone is fascinated by the Greek Mythology, that is why Rick Riordan is one of the most successful authors who wrote about it. In 2010, a film adaptation of this book, it made quite a lot if the box-office chart is involved, but when it comes to the technicality and the fame, it may be a stepping stone for newcomer actor Logan Lerman, and his cute face, but the film didn’t just make noise like people are expecting.

According to film critics, just because the books were great, doesn’t mean that the film adaptation will be amazing as well, what it apparently lack is that the screenplay was too boring for a film. The character build-up was pretty poor as well compared to the books, even if it is a young adult film, it has to have that feeling of connection to its viewers, but it wasn’t obviously seen in the last two films of the series, because of this, they might not actually continue making the third one.

MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES

Another amazing book was failed by a not-so-amazing movie, it was even a major flop, since it only made $59 million, even if it cost $60 million to make. The production was already talking about the sequel, even if the film hasn’t been released because they’re too confident that it would be a major hit, well it has a lot of reason to be. It has great actors, starring Lily Collins, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Lena Headey. It also has cute newbies that would totally make teenage girls flip, it is an action-fantasy-romantic film, that involves vampires, wolves, witches and more. What could possibly go wrong?

According to film critics, this is actually kind of better than Twilight, at least the books are. Instead of continuing a sequel, they just decided to turn it into a television series, which was said to be way better than the film, but still not as good as the books.
