People from all over the world always seem to get excited whenever there will be an eclipse that is going to happen, even if it wouldn’t really be visible in their area. This August 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible in some states of the United States, such as Oregon and Kentucky, while the other states will see a partial solar eclipse. There are actually four eclipses in 2017, a penumbra lunar eclipse and annular solar eclipse which happened both in February, and a partial lunar eclipse and a total solar eclipse both in August. To find out more about this solar eclipse, just keep on reading.

WARNING: Despite having an eclipse, it is still not advisable for anyone to actually look directly into the sun since it might cause severe damage to your eyes that might lead to blindness.

“There is no science in this world like physics, nothing comes close to the precision with which physics enables you to understand the world around you. It’s the laws of physics that allow us to say exactly what time the sun is going to rise, what time the eclipse is going to begin, and what time the eclipse is going to end.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ECLIPSE?

And eclipse is considered to be an astronomical event that happens whenever an astronomical object is obscured in a short amount of time, by passing into the shadow of the other object. Since we’re on earth, it is the moon, the sun, and the earth itself, that are the ones who make different types of eclipse happen, and it can be seen in different areas in the world.

This August, a solar eclipse will happen and it will be seen in some parts of the United States. A solar eclipse is actually when the moon moves right in front of where the sun, that would result in blocking the light from the sun and the area will get dimmer in a particular amount of time.

Most people think, however, the reason why we have solar eclipses, and that is because of these key cycles that happen at the same time.

Key Cycles

• There has to be a new moon

For the benefit of the doubt, one side of the moon is actually always lit because of the sun, however, the other side doesn’t face the earth so it cannot be seen, hence why we get different phases of the moon. One particular phase of the moon must occur for the solar eclipse to happen, and that is the new moon because the dark side of the moon is facing the earth.

• The moon has to cross the plane of earth’s orbit

Now that the dark side of the moon is facing the earth, a solar eclipse will occur. However, since the moon’s orbit doesn’t always match the earth’s orbit, solar eclipse doesn’t happen every time we get a new moon.

MYTHS, PREDICTIONS, AND SUPERSTITIONS

Since a solar eclipse literally an out of this world matter, so many people from all over the world, talk about myths, predictions, and superstitions about it, here are some of them.

TIME CONFUSION ON ANIMALS

People think that solar eclipses don’t just affect humans, but our dear animal friends as well. It is believed that during a solar eclipse, nocturnal animals start to wake up since they think it is night time. But solar eclipses only last for a short period of time, so this wouldn’t really have a bad effect or would make the animals confused.

BIRTH DEFECT

There are also people who believe that when you give birth during a lunar or solar eclipse, something wrong will happen to the baby or that it will have a defect, and this was based on the beliefs of the ancient Indians. There are people who were born on a particular astronomical event, they turned out to be normal.

ESKIMO DISEASE

People like Eskimos, who live in the northern part of the world where it is basically snowing 365 days a year, believe that they must turn their utensils upside down during an eclipse. This would apparently prevent you to get sick caused by the sun or the moon.

“Nations, like stars, are entitled to eclipse, since all is well, provided the light returns and the eclipse does not become endless night. Dawn and resurrection are synonymous. The reappearance of the light is the same as the survival of the soul.” – Victor Hugo

It always seems so amazing to actually witness these kinds of phenomenon that happens in the world. It just proves that it’s definitely not just the earth that matters in the entire universe. Life is just one of the things that are great, and there might be far greater things that we have no clue what’s about, but one thing is certain, and that is that the people who are going to witness something like this is lucky, since they would see something so incredible before they leave this world.
