A lot of people who loves sports dream of playing internationally to represent their country in worldwide competitions like the Olympics. But being an athlete is not easy, you have to be passionate in whatever you chose to do and must be disciplined enough to be able to reach your goal.
There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of being an athlete, one of them is being well-known all over the world and of course, some of them even earn millions. However, there are some athletes who seemed to have a change of heart. These people switched from being the world-renowned athletes to celebrities and personalities. Probably because being a celebrity is a bit easier than being an athlete. Here are some world-famous athletes turned celebrities.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
He has got to be one of the most famous wrestlers in the world. It actually runs in his blood because his family and other relatives are in the wrestling business as well. His family didn’t want him to become a wrestler but then they eventually gave in and trained him. Johnson made his debut in the World Wrestling Federation in 1996 but it was in 1997 when he claimed the nickname “The Rock”, which is the nickname that made him famous so even up to this date he is still using it.
Even while he was wrestling, he managed to get into showbiz but appearing in his very first television guessing in 1999 in an episode of That ‘70s Show. However, this was just the beginning of his marvelous career. He became a part of some blockbuster films like The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King, The Game Plan, Get Smart, Race To the Witch Mountain, Fast and the Furious, Hercules, Baywatch, San Andreas, Central Intelligence and just recently became a voice actor for the Academy-Award nominated Disney animation, Moana. He is not as active in the wrestling scene but still, makes cameos and a guesting once in a while.
When it comes to bodybuilding, one of the most famous names that you would think of is Arnold Schwarzenegger. It began around the 1960s and he won his first award as the Junior Mr. Europe at the age of 19. Throughout his tremendous career in bodybuilding, he won five Mr. Universe titles and seven wins for Mr. Olympia. It was his goal to be the greatest bodybuilder in the world, which he obviously achieved because he won not just once but seven times in Mr. Olympia.
Despite on his success as a bodybuilder, he wanted to become a part of the film industry. That is why in the 1970s, he was given a chance to play the role of Hercules in the Hercules in New York, but since he is Austrian, his accent was so thick that they had to dub his lines during the post-production. After just six years in the industry, he managed to snag a Golden Globe Award for the New Male Star of the Year. He is known for his films, Commando, Predator and The Terminator series. He is also known for working with Sylvester Stallone in some of his films.
“It was difficult for me in the beginning. I was told but the agents and casting people that my body was too weird, that I had a funny accent, and that my name was too long. You name it, and they told me I had to change it. Basically, everywhere I turned, I was told that I had no choice.” Schwarzenegger on his struggles in the beginning as an actor.
From a wrestler to a body builder, let’s move on to a martial artist. In the 1960s Norris lost during his first two tournaments at the International Karate Championships but managed to improve throughout his career. He won the Karate’s triple crown for most tournament wings of the year, as well as the Fighter of the year award given by the Black Belt magazine. He became the first Westerner in history to be given a Degree Black Belt Grand Master and was presented the Golden Lifetime Achievement Awards by the World Karate Union Hall of Fame.
His career in martial arts may not be that long, but maybe because his path is to go straight into films. In his first film debut, he met the great martial artist Bruce Lee, in the movie Way of the Dragon.
