British comedy shows can truly make you laugh! They have all the secret ingredients to make a great hilarious sitcom. They have everything right from a wacky original script to brilliant dialogue. It can guarantee tears of laughter and hardcore bellyaches owing to the fact that you end up laughing so much. The Brits have always proved that comedy is their specialty; they have proved time and again, that they have the wit and can flaunt it with great elan. Let’s find out some of the most popular comedy shows ever.
Jeeves and Wooster
Cambridge gents Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry brought a fresh new lease of life with P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves canon with Jeeves and Wooster. The shenanigans of Jeeves and Wooster is a never-ending roller coaster hilarious ride that can never fail to induce a belly laugh. Wooster plays the role of a well-mannered dandy who has a knack for falling into trouble time and again.
Jeeves is his penguin-suited valet who finds ingenious ways of bailing him out of harm’s way. The show paints a real picture of the soignee savviness of the gentlemen of the 1930s. The gentlemen are all about bachelors having conversations over stiff martinis, complaining about the weather, and skipping social engagements. Life seemed to be like a walk in the park for them, but it is not the same for everyone.
Coupling
Coupling is a lot like the uber-popular cult favorite, Friends, only it is older and whackier. A brainchild of Steven Moffat, the sitcom depicts the shenanigans and dating lives of a group of six friends, who are all set to become serious about their romantic lives, but then life happens! They go on to go through various life experiences and how it impacts their lives with hilarious effects.
The Office
The Office became a cult show and spawned several other shows in foreign languages! Although it has become a cult show, it may surprise you to know that the original, Ricky Gervais–fronted Office only lasted for 12 episodes! Spearheading the show is Gervais’s infamous David Brent, a general manager who at best could be described as daft, so daft that you actually feel bad for him. It eventually became Gervais’s most iconic character, and it still is come to think of it,
Fleabag
The protagonist of the show Fleabag is not even remotely perfect. Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag is about a greedy, perverted, apathetic, selfish woman. She spends her time drinking and leading a destructive life; however, in the process of it, derives maximum enjoyment out of it. She also manages a cafe in between; she uses black humor to deal with the various losses in her life. She manages to find humor through the dark alleys of sorrow and helps us laugh despite everything.
Peep Show
Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s Peep Show has enjoyed a long run on Channel 4 from 2003 until 2015, making it one of the network’s longest-running comedy shows. The show follows the path of Mark and Jez, played by David Mitchell and Robert Webb respectively; they are opposite to the other young and the sprightly living in London. They try their best to go through the travails of London’s high life trying to make sense of the madness that surrounds them.
Although it is a comedy, Peep Show is a lot more than its comedic overturns, in other words, it can even be billed as psychological horror. It’s hilarious, no doubt, but it’s also a pretty scary portrayal of two men who struggle through life’s battles with a penchant for failures rather than success. Let’s just say, for the two men, nothing ever comes out right, their prospect is always bleak and sad. This part sad part comedy show has been able to endear to its die-hard fans for years and years.
Spaced
The successful team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright brought their creative forces for good with Spaced. It is one of the most popular sitcoms that is built on the foundation of two 20-somethings who cons their way through life, pretending to stay married while at it. You discover laughter on the way as the two try to hide their non-romantic status from their landlady, and come up with hilarious, surreal, shenanigans that make you see them in a completely different light.
